Blog Action Day: Poverty ~ Can One Person Make a Difference?

Blog Action Day: Poverty ~

Can One Person Make a Difference?

I’ll be honest with you … I couldn’t wait to get up this morning. October 15th was finally here!

A while back I read a post on Daniel Scocco’s blog, Daily Blogging Tips, announcing the return of Blogging Idol … “Blogging Idol 2″ … and he said he’d post the details today … October 15th. I was very new to blogging when I discovered the last Blogging Idol and I remember thinking, “If they do this again … I really want to be involved in this.”

Between the usual, “Get dressed, brush your hair … have you brushed your teeth?” rush of getting my kids out the door for school I jumped on my computer and found Daniel’s post … “Blog Action Day: Why I Think the Internet Is Key to Combating Poverty.” Huh? Blogging Idol … where’s Blogging Idol? I want my chance to shine and take the blogging world by storm … Blog Action Day?! Huh?

My kids missed the bus (*sigh*) and as I’m driving them to school Daniel’s post started to really sink in. Here I am in the ordinary rush of yet another day of trying to “make a living online” … and I had to stop and think … “Suzanne, get over yourself! There are people out there who won’t get a meal today … simply by fate or circumstance.” That’s heavy! That’s HUGE! That’s tragic … that sucks guys! It really, really sucks. I’m wondering … have a single one of you reading this ever had to go without a meal (much less several) because it just wasn’t available? And you know I don’t mean that they were out of your favorite prime rib dinner by the time you got to the restaurant!

When I got home I followed the links in Daniel’s post to the Blog Action Day site and I was so impressed with what I found there. Their call to action is to: Publish, Donate, or Promote.

I personally feel moved to do all three:

  1. I will publish this post;
  2. I will Donate (microloan – cool concept) $25.00 to Kiva.org
  3. I will spend several hours today promoting Blog Action Day on the sites and networks where I frequent (Twitter, Twitter Moms, MySpace, Ryze, WAHM.com, ShoutLife, etc.) asking others to take part.

I sat there wondering if there was any way I … me … one person … could actually make a difference in the world … helping fight poverty? Well, I believe I can … will you please join me?

My call to action:

  1. Please post about this on your blog;
  2. Please donate something … anything … to one of the chosen charities or one of your choice (any amount will truly help);
  3. Please promote Blog Action Day and keep this spirit of generosity and humanity circulating today!

A special “thank you” to Daniel Scocco for opening my eyes to Blog Action Day … and I’ll keep you all posted on the whole Blogging Idol thing …

Had you heard of Blog Action Day? Do you want to help the less fortunate? Are you able and/or willing to blog about this today? Will you join me and donate something … anything … to this wonderful cause? Let’s prove that ONE person really can make a difference … will it be you? Let me know your thoughts. *SmiLes* Suzanne

P.S. Be sure you put October 15th on your calendar from here forward (actually you can register as early as August 15th to get a head start).

Leave a comment below and let others see how one person really can make a difference … and maybe use the bookmark button below to help get the word out about this important cause. Thanks!

    It’s crazy to think that about 30,000 children die each day from poverty. I work for an international non profit and it’s just so cool to see everyone getting involved.

    @ World Concern ~ Wow! That is so sad! Thank you for posting that “number” because I think it’s important for all of us to see just how horrible poverty really is. Thanks for introducing us to your site and feel free to comment again and post some information about your organization. *huGs* S

    Great post Suzanne, and evokes the true spirit of what today is all about. If even one of us can make a difference in our part of the world, then we all can.

    I have my post for Blog Action Day, and I’m donating from today for the rest of the year and beyond.

    It’s a great time to focus out attention on Poverty. With the global financial crisis, donations are going to decline and hit the poorest of the poor really hard.

    To all who have commented … it was so great to see the entire WORLD come together on one day (you can participate next year Dennis) and, as mentioned, we need to keep this on our mind every day … of every year … as there are so many who need our compassion and our help. *huGs* Suzanne

    WOW! Suzanne! I was drawn to your article! This is my daily focus and my daily prayer to find people still care about the state of others. I have seen and lived through
    way too much poverty and it is not just overseas… it is here in America, every town in every state every day has someone going hungry, cold, no shoes, no money, no friends, no shelter, no utilities.

    This is where I say to you.. I would like to help on a daily basis.

    Please check out my BLOG # 6 and please let me know how I can help you.

    Even I had blogged about the blog action day and its goal.

    We are all obliged to help others who are not fortunate enough to have what we have ,this is the least we can do for them.

    Great post Suzanne

    Even if it’s ended, there will be other crisis waiting in the future.. so it can be yes or no.
