A Cross Blog Conversation with Kelly McCausey …

Tip: I have added a lot of links off of the page today and I know that can confuse and frustrate some readers so I thought I’d offer a quick tip. If you’d like to continue reading this post but would like to see what I’m referring to in the links you can hold the “ctrl” button and then click on the link. This will open the page in a new window (so you can view it and still be here on the post page).

I’m so excited!!!!!! Things are really heating up in the Hot Summer Seminar Series that one of my favorite WAHMs, Kelly McCausey, has put on for us (for those who aren’t familiar WAHM = work at home mom). The series is made up of weekly WordPress training seminars and so far the information has been outstanding!

I am one of the speakers and I’ll will be presenting my seminar on gaining RSS subscribers on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 so I hope you’ll join us.

Now, Kelly does a “cross blog conversation” with the presenters for the seminar and I’m “up” this week. You can read her post here: Suzanne Franco, I Want to Know …

The questions she has asked me regarding the Blogging Idol contest are:

  • Were you nervous about putting yourself out there?
  • Did you see the competition as a way to really push yourself?
  • Were you concerned about perhaps not performing well?

Were you nervous about putting yourself out there?

Kelly, I first heard about Blogging Idol during Season 1 and I was totally intrigued by the whole concept. It was too late for me to enter but I knew if there was another season upcoming I wanted to be a part of it. When I heard there’d be a second season I couldn’t wait to apply.

As for being nervous I guess I didn’t really even think about that. Ignorance is bliss right? LOL. The part that made me “nervous” or uncomfortable was asking others for help. I think a lot of us struggle with this issue don’t you? I especially see this in women … we are typically the care givers and are used to taking care of those around us but we really struggle when I comes time to ask for a favor in return. I sometimes felt bad asking for help and somewhat nervous about what others would think about me asking. *sigh* Silly huh? I am also a total technophobe so anything that had a technical aspect made me very nervous and upset (adding the RSS optin, adding plugins, adding banners, etc.). I almost didn’t even apply because Daniel required us to add the Feedburner account and chicklet to our blog.

Did you see the competition as a way to really push yourself?

I did indeed see the competition as a way to push myself; in fact, I think that was truly my real motivation for entering the competition. It wasn’t really for the money or the prizes at stake but I really wanted to participate in some good old fashion competition! I did push myself really hard during that month. I worked around the clock usually getting 4 hours of sleep a night. I enlisted the help of my family – Ken did most of the cooking, he and the kids really helped out with the cleaning, and I spent most every waking moment online. Between the writing/blogging and the promoting it was full time work for sure.

The contest was open to blogs with 0 – 2,000 subscribers. I started with 50 subscribers and actually those were people who I mentioned the contest to and they came over and subscribed prior to the contest. LOL. In fact, I didn’t really even understand what an RSS feed was when I applied so I had my work cut out for me. Obviously, it is much easier for someone with 1,000 or 2,000 subscribers to increase their subscriber base because they already have traffic, momentum, readers to ask for help, etc. so I really didn’t know if I stood a chance at winning but I knew I’d give it my all. For those not familiar we were awarded points for (a) gain in RSS subscribers, (b) reader votes, and (c) judge votes. I didn’t think I stood a chance at the point for RSS subscriber gain so I knew I’d really have to “shine” and impress people by using unique strategies … and getting creative paid off in the voting.

Were you concerned about perhaps not performing well?

Truthfully, I wasn’t really concerned about not performing well, but there were a few times that I felt like giving up (from sheer exhaustion). But once I got my kids involved there was no way I would have quit! I really used this contest as a way to show my kids that if you want something badly enough you will get it. You have to be willing to work hard without giving up and you have to want it more than anything else (or in the case of a competition … you have to want it more than anyone else).

I would encourage anyone reading to truly “go for it” when they have a goal in mind. Like they say, “If you shoot for the moon and fall short … you’ll still land in the stars.”

My Question for Kelly …

So Kelly … you’ve shared that you have 60 subscribers to your blog and I’d love to help you increase that!

What have you done to gain RSS subscribers and what is the next step planned to grow your readership?

I see you on Twitter a fair amount and you have a good number of followers. One thing I know has increased my subscribers was adding a Twitter landing page on my blog: http://www.suzannefranco.com/twitter On this page I encourage visitors to subscribe to my RSS feed (and to follow me at my other social media pages online). I then added that page as the link in my Twitter profile (as opposed to my main/index page). What do you think of that idea?

Well … a “Thank You” to Kelly and a big “Thanks” to all of you for reading guys … leave your comments … and any questions you have below. If you haven’t done so go over to Kelly’s site and read her post and why don’t you go ahead and subscribe to her RSS while you’re there? LOL *SmiLes* Suzanne

How I Got My BikiniAfter40.com Site Started

I mentioned here on the blog that I had started a brand new blog where I share my fitness, health, and weight loss progress and that I was going to start sharing how I set up the new blog and how I drive traffic, get readers and subscribers, and how I monetize that blog.

So this is the first post of many where I will share what I’m doing with that blog. Obviously I’m sharing here from the blogging standpoint but if you’re also interested in fitness, health, and weight loss please join us over there on the blog Bikini After 40 so we can all encourage and support each other.

My buddy, Dennis, asked me if men were welcome … Yes, men are definitely welcome (despite the reference to “bikini”) to join us gals and participate there. Some of the topics are geared towards women but much of it is fitness, health and weight loss in general so no worries there.

OK … let’s get started …

Choosing My Domain and Setting Up the Blog

I’ve mentioned here on the blog that I use HostGator hosting and I use GoDaddy for all of my domains. Yes, they are affiliate links LOL but I really do believe I have a system down pat for setting up a new blog very quickly and without any hassle.

Domain Name. First, I choose my domain name. For my niche sites I choose domains that are very … hmmm … full of keywords, but for this site I wanted it to be something fun and catchy. I did however do the keyword research and luckily some of the keyword phrases I set out to tackle (“fitness at 40” and “fitness for over 40”) worked well for the domain I wanted. No, not an exact phrase like I usually try to get but at least it’s got a couple of my keywords in there. LOL.

I log into my GoDaddy account and I purchase the domain name. DURING the purchase there is an option to “Set nameserver.” (see image). Since I already have an account with HostGator I can enter the nameservers while purchasing and then everything is set up almost instantly (instead of waiting the 72 hours they quote). You can get the nameservers from your host or if you have other domains with GoDaddy that are hosted elsewhere you can get the nameservers from inside your GoDaddy account (find them attached to the other domains in your account).

Hosting. Then I go to HostGator via my cpanel and I add the new domain to my account. By the time I’m done doing this the domain is usually up and ready and online. I then go to the Fantastico section within my HostGator account and I add WordPress to the new domain.

I Select a Theme

For this particular blog I decided to go with Squeeze Theme. I am also using it here on suzannefranco.com and I’m starting to really like it (didn’t “not” like it before … I’m just technophobic and resistant to change LOL). Some of the reasons I chose Squeeze Theme for the BA40 site (that “BA40” looks kinda funny huh?! LOL) is that it’s (a) very easy to work with within the admin panel and doesn’t require a lot (if any) coding for what I need to do, and (b) I can add some “squeeze” pages for some optin pages (an example would be here on the sf.com blog http://www.suzannefranco.com/blogging-idol-secrets-revealed-ebook/). A “squeeze” page is typically a page that promotes something specific and visitors/readers no place to go but to buy/optin or leave. The one I used is a modified version where they can still see the main navigation buttons at the top but there is no sidebar to distract them.

On BA40 I will offer some free eBooks and possibly email mini-series so that I can grow my email list.

I Dressed It Up

OK … well I didn’t personally dress it up! LOL. I hired the very talented Chrissy Jensen (<– love her!) to do that for me. Initially she did the header and the color scheme (header, background colors, heading colors, link colors, etc.). This can all be changed within the Squeeze Theme admin area but I’m not creative at all so for me it’s best left to a professional. I also hired her for the optin box and some other graphics but we’ll get to those in an upcoming post.

I Defined My “Purpose” for the Blog

We often have ideas swimming around in our heads about a business and we never really map it out from start to finish.

When I first had the idea to do a blog about my journey to lose weight and get healthy it was more of an online journal to keep myself accountable. As I thought more and more about it and visited other blogs with a similar “niche” or “theme” I realized that I would eventually reach my goals and I would love to help others get there too. If you’ve known me for any amount of time you’ll know that’s what I enjoy most about being online … meeting new people and helping them as much as possible.

I have tried a lot of ways to lose weight … some have worked and some have failed. I would love to share what they are and the reasons I believe they worked or didn’t work.

I also have access to a great fitness trainer who is also a personal friend. I explained the blog to her and told her that I’m very lucky to have her helping me. I know that readers who don’t have access to a personal trainer will assume that it’s the reason I will succeed and the reason they can’t. So … I will be getting help from her to show my readers how they too can get in an incredible workout. She will show us effective home workouts we can do without any fancy club or equipment. Pretty cool huh?

So the purpose is to keep myself accountable and to help as many people as possible. When I find ways to actually monetize the blog I am open to that too. This is in stark contrast to the niche sites I set up that are simply there to drive traffic and/or sales to make me money! This one is very personal and I’m very passionate about it! The money will come when it’s time.

I Wrote Out Some Post Ideas and Outlined the Categories

I got a Word Doc started with my topic and post ideas … and after reviewing those I was able to define some of my categories. These will change as time goes by and I find my “groove” on the blog but it’s important to have some type of an outline to get started … or you WON’T EVER START!

(Side Note): Speaking of STARTING … I’ve said time and time again the biggest reason I believe people fail online is they simply never get STARTED!!! This isn’t brain surgery guys! It isn’t rocket science! Just take an idea … any of the hundreds you have swimming around in your head … and take that leap ok? What’s the worst thing that could happen? I can tell you … the worst thing that could happen is that you change your mind and you’ve spent $7.50 on a domain and you don’t keep it up and move on to something else. You will still have your hosting and you just start again and see if something else sticks. Come on … give it a go!

Get the eBook So You Can Follow Along

OK … that is a brief overview of how I actually got the blog idea off of my chest and onto the net. Next I’ll start using the very techniques I’ve outlined in my “Blogging Idol Secrets Revealed” eBook to drive visitors and subscribers to the blog. If you haven’t downloaded it yet you really should check it out so you can follow along.

Do you have any questions so far? Do you have the eBook yet? Have you implemented any of the ideas so far? What would you most like to see step-by-step (in more detail) while I build and promote my new blog? I’m here to help so just tell me what to do ok? *SmiLes* Suzanne

Are You Sexy? We’re About to Find Out!

I love finding new gadgets for my blog that are not only cool but that serve a function … like helping me blog better or something that helps me promote my blog.

I was visiting my friend Dawn’s blog (about Social Media and Isagenix <— a nutritional cleanse I’m using to lose weight) and while I was commenting I saw her awesome “Sharing is Sexy” plugin and I just had to have it!

It’s a social bookmark plugin that you can display on your posts and/or pages that easily allows your visitors to share your content (you can also use it to quickly bookmark your posts – which you should always do right?).

They have most all of the sites there to choose from and you can simply add the ones you want by checking a box. You then drag them into the order you want them to display in on your site.

So now for the real question … are you sexy? Go ahead … try it! Give me a Retweet, send my post to Facebook … Stumble, Digg … Mister Wong (ß—- one of my personal favs) … and leave me a comment and tell me just how sexy you are! *huGs* Suzanne

Problems Adding Video to the Blog …

*

<—— A quick reminder to Retweet if you enjoy the post … Thanks!

As you may, or may not have noticed, some of the videos I have added to the blog take longer to load than others. This usually happens when I host the videos myself due to their size and/or length (as opposed to embeding them from YouTube for instance).

I’ve added several videos to my blog for the Blogging for Bucks BootCamp and I’ve never run into any problems while doing so. I’ve been trying to troubleshoot this and make sense of why this is happening.

I don’t know yet but one guess is that for the BootCamp I posted the videos on static pages as opposed to using a blog post type entry.

I’ve tried the same video format that I’ve used in the past and I’ve even played around with some other formatting and it’s pretty much the same result. I have always used the video upload button in the admin section (image below) and I use .swf format like I’ve always used in the past) so I’m not sure why this is causing so many problmes.

video-upload-button1

I have posted the last video lesson/tutorial (Keyword Research) onto a static page and then I’ve link over to it … and we’ll see if we have better luck with it this way.

I have edited the post here: http://www.suzannefranco.com/keyword-research-my-tactics-and-formulas-video-tutorial/ and I’ve placed an image of a player there so that when you click on the player it will take you to the static page with the actual video. Here’s a direct link to the video page if you want to check it out: http://www.suzannefranco.com/keyword-research-video-tutorial/.

I’m hoping this will cut down on the load problems we’ve been experiencing, as well as, the problems with the RSS emails that go out when I post.

Meanwhile, I will be searching high and low for some answers so we can all learn from this. Thanks for your patience. *SmiLes* Suzanne

P.S. Did you have any problems loading the posts that had video in them? If so, which ones? What browser were you using? Do you use video on your own site/blog? What format do you suggest I use? Any feedback and/or help would be greatly appreciated. ;)

P.S. To create the videos … I’ve used both Camtasia screen capture software and I’ve used my Flip Ultra camera and then imported the file into Camtasia to edit and product it.

Brainstorming Your Business – What If? (Part 3 – Audio Tutorial)

*

I did a couple of posts about brainstorming (Part 1 and Part 2) and if you did the exercise you should have two lists of topics that you are passionate about. Do any of them jump out at you? Are there any topics on there that if you spent several hours a day researching, reading, and writing about you would lose track of time? Something that you’d talk and/or write about whether you got paid or not? If so, you might want to explore it further for a new online business.

Now … here’s the part where I want to interject some wisdom.

I want you to answer this question … honestly. How long have you been thinking about starting an online business? Has it been two months … six months … a year or two? I meet and converse with a ton of people online and I am always amazed (and sad) to hear how long people have been searching for the “perfect” online business … so they NEVER get started!

What If?

I’d like to ask you something … what if??? What if you just picked one of these topics and got started … NOT knowing at all what you’re doing … having no business plan … but just decided TODAY that you are going to give something a try??? How does that feel to you? Scary? Exciting? Relief? Come on! Let’s do this! Quit researching, reading, and writing your ideas down … and watching what seems like everyone around you do this … just do it … TODAY! OK?

Now with that said I want you to know that it’s almost certain that you will start more than one online business so the one you start with does NOT have to be perfect … or even great. You just need to get yourself started and you can make changes and adjustments along the way. You can even scrap it and start all over if it’s not working right?

So … are you willing to get your new online business started? I’d personally suggest getting started with a self-hosted WordPress blog because you can do so much to that platform that you can start almost any type of business with it … and again … you can always make changes down the road as you get the hang of things.

I’ll make you a deal. I use and promote HostGator hosting and I love them. If you’re willing to use my affiliate link for your new hosting account (or transfer to them) I will personally help you get your hosting set up and get your domain purchased and pointed to your hosting account. Then I will help you get WordPress set up on your new account and give you some basic pointers on where I’d start and we’ll get you up and running for your new business very quickly. Basically you can get your business started with my assistance and guidance for under $8 bucks using the links and coupons at the very bottom of this post!

So … what do you think? Are you ready to quit sitting on the sidelines and start to play this game? I can help … so just let me know! *SmiLes* Suzanne

Have you been searching the net looking for the perfect business? Are you afraid to get started? Do you want my help with this? Please reach out and tell me what’s up! Let us hear from you in the comments below (or via Contact page).

Homepage Excerpts Plugin (Video Tutorial)

*

<—— A quick reminder to Retweet if you enjoy the post … Thanks!

Anthony was mentioning that the posts on the blog were taking up way too much space on the main index page … and he’s right. Today I remembered a plugin I’d read about months ago that is designed to help you manage how much of each post you want to show on the main page and how many posts, etc.

The free plugin is from Daniel Scocco of Daily Blog Tips and it’s called Homepage Excerpts WordPress Plugin.

homepageexcerpts

I’ve done a video to show you how to go download the plugin to your hard drive and then go into your WordPress admin panel and upload the plugin there. I also show you how to activate it and how to go in and configure it the way you want it to display.

Not only will this clean up your main index page and make it look much cleaner it can really help your SEO efforts too. When you hear about duplicate content it is referring to having duplicate content on the same domain name or URL. And if you think about the way a WordPress blog is set up you are putting up a lot of duplicate content (without even knowing it). While a new post is on my main/index page in its entirety it is also being placed in its entirety on the single post page for that post. So if I only post a portion of it on my main page that will definitely help with this problem.

It also strips the html out of the post on the main page (removing links, images, audio, video and such) so I’d imagine this will also help with the load time of my main page (please let me know if you were experiencing any problems with the load time).

Here’s the video:

So … what do you think of the new look and feel on the main page? Do you use excerpts on your main page or do you post articles in their entirety? Have you considered using excerpts? Did you understand how to add and configure this plugin? Let us hear from you! *SmiLes* Suzanne

UPDATE:

P.S. I want to thank those who reminded me about the excerpt feature that’s in your WordPress admin panel. Some prefer it because they can decide how much of each post they’d like on the main/home page on a case by case basis. I’m still making my final decision between the two and I’ve enjoyed hearing the different opinions on this. I do miss seeing images on the page … but I also like the clean, uniform look that the plugin creates.

Please keep sharing your thoughts on this ok?

Fix / Correct Image Alignment in WordPress Blog (Video)

*

<—— A quick reminder to Retweet if you enjoy the post … Thanks!

Yesterday I decided to add the Tweet Meme plugin (far left – button that allows you to easily retweet this blog post) and I decided I wanted it to appear on the upper left of my post. I usually align my images to the left of the text so I decided it would look better if I moved the images to the right of the post.

I logged into my admin and did the edit to move the image to the right but it didn’t work. It showed it moved right in the admin panel but it wouldn’t move on the actual live post. I googled the problem and found a fix (so I thought). I decided to turn on the screen capture so I could show you how to “fix” this problem. I followed the instuctions and it didn’t work. As I was scanning the style.css file (where I was to put this “fix” code) I noticed some image code already in there. Sure enough there was an error in the code on this file.

Now … this might be a little advanced for some of you but I want you to watch this video so you can learn from this. If you do enough with WordPress (or any blog/site) you will eventually have a reason to dive into the code to look for something or to make some adjustments. (Hey … never say never! LOL).

The one mistake I made that I want to stress is that I should’ve copied that file on to my desktop BEFORE I started messing around with that code! That was if I did anything that didn’t work or “broke”something I’d have the page that I started with.

NOTE: I’m sorry the audio on this video has some weird background buzz … sorry about that!

I hope you enjoyed the video. I plan on doing a lot more of these videos to capture what I get up and do each day for “work.” Let me know if there’s something specific you need to learn and if I know how to do it I’ll do a video for you. *SmiLes* Suzanne

P.S. So … how do you like the Tweet Meme? If you enjoyed this post please try out the new button and give this a retweet! LOL Thanks!

UPDATE: My husband had the same problem on one of his blogs and I realized that I didn’t post a link to the code I was referencing in the video. (Sorry). So here’s a link to the post on the WordPress forum: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/202431

BANS (eBay Affiliate Program) Earnings Update Feb, Mar, and April 2009

*
It’s that time … time for me to give you an update on my BANS (Build a Niche Stores) business and my other EPN (eBay Partner Network) profits here on the blog. If you haven’t been following along you can take a look at my BANS profits for June 2008 ($203.36), my BANS profits for July 2008 ($269.41), my BANS profits for August 2008 ($531.51) and my BANS profits for September 2008 ($821.74). Or you can get an overview by seeing my last post update of my BANS profits for October, November, December and January.
I could see my numbers were down a bit this month and I was “tracking” to do just over $500 and then on May 1st I logged in to get my final numbers and they were down! Huh? What? Well, they changed my ACRUs (new eBay customer sign ups) from $40/per to $28/per. Since my ACRUs started out at $25 and were as low as $10 at one time I shouldn’t be too upset but it was shocking and somewhat upsetting.

So my income for February 2009 was $533.45, March 2009 was $661.14 and April 2009 was down to $407.05. Considering I haven’t put any work or effort into these sites in the past several months I really can’t complain right?

I will reiterate that you should never put all of your eggs in one basket and online you should definitely diversify your income streams.

Last month I launched a new site, “The Destination Wedding Site,” and I am just starting to integrate some eBay products there (and now Amazon products too) so we’ll see how that goes. For this new site I’m using two new products that I LOVE!!!

The first one I tried is phpBay and it’s a WordPress Plugin that makes it really easy to add eBay auctions to any WP post or page. You can see an example here: Destination Wedding Books.

I can’t tell you how easy this is to do! You add this product like any other plugin and activate it. There’s a very easy to follow manual that walks you through your options and tells you how to do each. The most technical it got (you know me … non-techie! LOL) was I chose an option that required me to copy/paste some code to my .htaccess file and that was very easy too. If you get hung up on any of it there’s a support forum and everyone is very helpful.

The second new product is ReviewAzon and it’s an awesome new plugin that helps you add Amazon products to your WordPress pages and posts and it even pulls in the product description and customer reviews (great for much needed content instead of page full of affiliate links!).

You can see where I used it on my new site here: The Destination Wedding Planner: The Ultimate Guide.

Again, this was a plugin that you add like any other WordPress plugin and then you control it and use it right in your WP admin panel. It also have a great user manual and a support forum that’s been very helpful.

I’ll keep you posted on how these new products do for my sites but I expect great things from them.

Be sure you check them out:

Check out phpBay

Check out ReviewAzon

So here are my eBay numbers for the past several months:

September 2008 – $821.74 (ACRUs $25)

October 2008 – $733.33 (ACRUs $25)

November 2008 – $315.81 (ACRUs $10)

December 2008 – $186.11 (ACRUs $10)

January 2009 – $613.83 (ACRUs $40)

February 2009 – $533.45 (ACRUs $40)

March 2009 – $661.14 (ACRUs $40)

April 2009 – $407.05 (ACRUs $28)

Are you using BANS? Are you using EPN to make money? How have your sales/profits been these last few months? Have you tried phpBay and/or ReviewAzon? Please comment below so we can all learn from each other. *SmiLes* Suzanne

Thesis WordPress Theme – Quick Review

*

I’ve been working hard at one of my new websites (The Destination Wedding Site) and I decided to give the Thesis WordPress theme a try. I’ve heard a lot of great things about the theme and so far so good.

It was written by a couple guys who know a lot about SEO so it’s a very SEO friendly theme and I love that!

The theme is very easily customizable. You can use a two column or three column in a bunch of different configurations with a simple click of a button – sweet. There is a Thesis admin section right inside your WordPress admin panel so you can make most of your changes right there while logged in to WordPress.

So far, the only thing I’ve tried to do outside the admin panel was to add my own header image and that didn’t go so well. As you know, I’m not very techie at all so whenever I come to something that involves code I usually expect to mess it up the first try … and I did. Well, a huge “THANKS” to Bey Luen, of BlogHighlight, for helping me get it working. I followed a tutorial on his blog and when it didn’t work right (shocker LOL) I used his contact form and he helped me immediately and without making me feel *dumb* at all.

Overall, from what I’ve read (a LOT) and from my experience the Thesis theme is a total winner! It’s much less expensive than having a theme designed for you and has a lot more to offer than any of the free themes I’ve seen out there. They also have a support forum where the creators are very active and seem to help everyone when needed.

Take a Quick Look at Thesis WordPress Theme!

Let me know if you have any questions about the Thesis theme and I’ll answer what I can and go find answers to what I can’t. *SmiLes* Suzanne
