Live Video Challenge (Video Post)

by Suzanne on February 25, 2011

This week I took a challenge from online friend, Dani, on her Dani Nir-McGrath | Home Business Success Tips & Motivation, FB page to make a live video recording and post it to her page. Some participants did a business video (business as usual), some did a tour of their site as an introduction, and I chose to talk (vlog) about how we can avoid doing video by coming up with excuses – most of which are just insecurities and quite honestly unfounded and petty.

So that got me wondering … how many of you actually use video online? Is it live video or more of a screen capture video? Do you have your own insecurities that keep you from creating videos more often (or even EVER)? I for one know that if I’m looking to learn from someone online who’s “been there done that” and is even willing to take the time to record how to do something … I’m not terribly concerned about whether or not they’re having a “bad hair day” or if they’ve taken the time and energy to put on some makeup. What about you? Would that ruin your viewing experience or are you just happy to have the video to watch?

I’d love to hear your thoughts are on doing live video so please participate by posting a comment below … have you done them? Do you enjoy it? Do you feel insecure? If so, about what? Please, please, please … let us hear from you on this one ok? *SmiLes* Suzanne

P.S. And if you haven’t joined us over on my Facebook Page …. please do so (and invite me to your page too) http://www.facebook.com/suzannefrancodotcom

I totally agree. Videos catch on quickly in comparison to an article.

I think the art of video to promote your business or Vlogging as many like to call it is definatly on the rise. For the simple reason that it makes it alot more practical for the reader, as they dont have to read large amounts of text, they can just simply listen or watch what your business is all about.

Videos, especially in the sales pages are VERY effective, even though I am an advanced Internet user and I know which products are good and which are bad, clips in the sales pages usually hook my attention instead of pages with loads of text.

I’ve avoided doing live video like the plague, but keep telling myself it’s time to just do it. Maybe I’ll just start with using my voice and slides and ease myself into live ‘me’.

Lol, that’s my exact take on this issue, the whole “easing in” concept. I do think videos are important to give credibility, but I’m still not comfortable about being in them. It’s a challenge worth facing, though!

Interesting post.

We do quite a lot of videos for our site, and as a (former) performer, I personally have no issues with regards to insecurities, but I can see how people could easily have those. The thing that I find puts me off doing videos at times is the time and hassle involved. If you want to do a little more professional editing, and maybe use 2 cameras, then suddenly the work involved for just one 5 min video absolutely mushrooms. The thing is those videos that are only slightly better produced are much more interesting to follow and watch.

We don’t do any live videos at the moment, but it’s something we are constantly considering.

Do I enjoy doing them? Not really, due all the hassle that is involved in creating a decent video. I much prefer writing a useful blog entry or article.

I feel its always hard not to feel insecure when infront of a camera, but like you hint at in this post, are you that critical of people on videos when you watch them? I bet you dont care how good the person looks or what clothes their wearing,i try to bear this in mind

Dear Suzanne,
I have been playing with the thought of creating videos myself for a while now. So far, I have procrastinated in this respect. There seems to be quite a learning curve involved in getting started. in addition, I am quite a shy person so I find it difficult to overcome that hurdle and in a way expose myself to the world. Personally, I like to watch other peoples videos and, as you mentioned, I also prefer to follow video instructions when learning something. I hope, I will be able to produce my own videos soon. Thank you.

Doing live video for people to watch about yourself for whatever reason really helps build relationships and increase trust. In an age where we don’t see the seller, cashier or bag boy anymore the more transparent we become the better. Of course that is if you don’t have something to hide.

Some live video is done really “cheesy” with a terrible background, poor audio or reflections in the person’s glasses (:

If you take your time to do it right it will greatly enhance your online relationships.

In a world where we don’t always see the cashier, salesperson or bag boy I think it becomes increasingly important to be as transparent as possible.

Live video helps people connect, creating more relationship and trust.

Although you want to be natural I don’t think that means you should not have as professional of a video as possible. You are still marketing yourself and whatever you have to offer so make sure you have a good camera, audio, background and personal tidiness.

I really should do a live video right now while I am thinking about it (:

Firstly, Hi Suzanne, where are you? where is your new post? The last post I saw was on 25 Feb…

Yeah, I think what do you need is confidence, relax, and speak loud where on camera. Indeed, it is more difficult to do than just to saying it :) I never felt it

Hey Suzanne, first time blogger on your site. I thought I would be a lot better at live video than I am. I need more practice. Bad hair days and appearance don’t bother me but if someone is visibly struggling to get their message out I feel their pain and can’t wait for it to be over. As online marketers its important to master video or find someone that can do it for you. Screen capture and voice overs work well too.

Making a really quality video is quite a challenge, but if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing right. With the advent of video cameras in every cell phone, it has become commonplace for people to make a “video” that is out-of-focus, has choppy sound, and shakes enough to make the viewers seasick, and then post it on their blog. Personally, I would rather read one good, short paragraph than watch a long, rambling video.

For those wanting to make videos, I would suggest:
1) Get a decent digital video camera
2) Get some editing software and learn to use it (Lightworks, a pro-grade package, was recently open-sourced)
3) Write a script and keep it concise and to the point
4) Don’t be a perfectionist (despite the above) – most of your viewers probably won’t notice minor mistakes.

I’ve uploaded a few videos but they’re not of me, they’re shots of some funny or interesting things I’ve come across.

I also am not concerned about how a person looks in a video. I’m more concerned if the video is worth watching. I don’t really like wasting my time on useless videos or those that drag on for a long time before getting to the gist.

Video post is much faster way of gathering followers. It takes shorter time to know the subject and much faster to comprehend. However it takes video expertise because there are important things that are to be considered. That is quality, size, format and audio synchronization. With all these, viewers can have a happy viewing. ;)

Video is definately becomming a more popular medium and not surprising given the old adage that a picture speaks a thousand words. That said, it is quite difficult to take the first step from semi anonymouse writer to very visable video presenter.

A creative idea can only ignite the viral marketing for a video .. The video should have a fresh idea . even if it does not it should be little different what other are doing .. so that u can compare market it and what better source for viral marketing of a video rather than Facebook . !
