Make Some Extra Money … Buy Low ~ Sell High

Make Some Extra Money … Buy Low ~ Sell High

Buy Low ~ Sell High

Want to make some extra money? One way to make some extra cash is by buying stuff at a low price and reselling it at a higher price. Sounds simple enough right? Well, this idea falls into the category that I call “simple ~ not always easy” but if you’re willing to put in the effort it can be lucrative.

Where to Find Stuff

Some of the best ways to do this is to get familiar with eBay, Craig’s List, and your local classified ad sources (online and print). If you’re in a good area for flea markets and garage sales those work well too.

Know or Research

You should try to stick to the type of products you know something about or you’ll need to get really good at researching the selling price of the items you want to pick up.

Be Prepared

You might be surprised at some of the good deals you can find if you just get in the habit of watching for them.

There are people who don’t know how to list items on eBay and they will let things go for way below their value (sorry … but it’s true). There are people who don’t understand the value, those who just need money fast, who could get more if they knew more about how and where to “sell” their stuff, those going through a divorce who have no emotional attachment to their “stuff” and just want it gone and those who are relocating and need it “gone” by a certain time and this even works great with retail stores when they have a closeout, a great coupon, and/or rebate. Now … before you go accusing me of suggesting you take advantage of people … that’s not the case! This stuff is going to sell to SOMEOME … I promise you. This is a business decision and nothing more.

This method can work for the following:

  1. High end items. The margins will be greatest on high end items. Think electronics, expensive bikes, motorcycles, go carts, golf carts, jewelry, etc.
  2.

  3. Large lots of items that can be broken down and sold off separately. A couple of examples that would work well: (a) large lots of children’s clothing (name brands work best) that you can turn around and sell individually, (b) direct sales items that representatives getting out of the business might be selling off (think Mary Kay, Tupperware, direct sales jewelry, nutritional products, etc.), and (c) incomplete “sets” like silverware, dishes and tools.
  4.

  5. Items that can be broken down for parts. The most common example would be cars. But really get creative here … I know someone who parts out old boats … maybe computers and other electronics?
  6.

  7. Shop outlet stores. If you are fortunate enough to live near a good outlet mall you do have an advantage. We once bought a couch at the Pottery Barn Outlet for about $400 and sold it on Craig’s List for $1,200. The outlet mall is 45 minutes away and we no longer have the storage space to buy/sell these bigger items but if I really needed the money I’d figure it out trust me! Some of the other stores that have a great selection: Coach, Lladro, Under Armour, and Quicksilver. Don’t be afraid to bargain with the manager for these products. They want to move this stuff too. I personally wouldn’t mention that you’ll be selling it online because sometimes they frown on having their brand moved that way but get creative and it doesn’t hurt to make a lowball offer on bulk items.
  8.

  9. Look for incredible savings, rebates, and coupons. In a recent post I told you about an MSN/Live rebate offer where they were giving a 30% rebate for eBay purchases made through their search engine. I believe the maximum rebate was $200 so that meant you could purchase something in the $660 price range to take full advantage. If you bought 2 or 3 laptops using this rebate you would’ve made $400-$600 by relisting them at full price and selling them right back on the marketplace.

Things to keep in mind and factor in:

  1. Sales tax
  2. Shipping costs (buying and selling)
  3. Selling costs (ads, listing/auction fees, PayPal, etc.)
  4. Gas and travel expenses
  5. Your time
  6. Condition of product (ask for a lot of pictures and have them rate the product’s condition 1-10)
  7. Authenticity (be especially careful with jewelry, designer products, antiques, etc.)

A Few More Tips

Keep in mind that you don’t have to sell the product using the same method you used to purchase it. In fact, sometimes it’s even better not to. If you purchased a couch on Craig’s List and relist it there … those who had seen it listed there previously will not want to pay your higher price a week later. Also, pay attention to how you present the product for sale. Give as much detail as possible and use company listed features whenever possible. Add as many pictures as you can and try to make the pictures look good … no … make that GREAT! I can take the same necklace or piece of clothing that someone else had for sale and make it ”look” twice as expensive by using some basic merchandising techniques … think lighting, color setting … think about how nice things look when you window shop in the mall. For higher end items I promise you this extra effort will pay off!

Have you used this money making method before? Have you ever bought something for the specific purpose of reselling it for a profit? If so, how did it go? Do you have any ideas to add to this list? You know I’d love to hear from you and it’s always great when we can all learn more on the topic from you … the readers … so let’s have it! LOL *SmiLes* Suzanne

Good Tips Suzanne!!

When Kim and I get bored… we go to Storage Building Auctions in town! You can find them on the web, just search for storage building auction, “your city here”…

We have found, bought and sold for great profit some deals at these auctions! My sister actually turned us onto them, when she bought a box of plates for $3 that turned out to be some kind of fine china, that she sold on eBay for more than $5,000. (One piece at a time, to get everyone bidding against each other :-) )

They are also a TON of fun when you get to the know the auctioneers pretty good. Entertaining and a good way to just get out for a day!

Here is another tip for buying low… search for products that are spelled wrong.

For example if people were looking laptops they would search the word “laptop” and bid on those products… good thing there are people who can’t spell correctly. if you search the word “Labtop” you will find Numerous results for laptops…. less people will bid on these because normal people will search for “laptop” therefore keeping the bid price lower.

I’ve done quite a bit of buying/selling on Ebay over the years.. something else you can do… Keep an eye on sites like http://www.dealnews.com You can come across some really good deals on there and Amazon etc… if you play your cards right and can compare those items to what they are selling for on Ebay, you could possible sell the item on Ebay, buy it at the same time from one of the deals going on at dealnews, and have the item shipped to your buyer at Ebay and never even have to touch the item.

I’m always amazed at what folks will buy at Ebay, when all they had to do was do a little research and find a better deal. But that gives us an opportunity to cash in!

Another tip… hot items like the Nintendo Wii… last year i purchased 4 of them in the stores for 250.00, held them a while until a week or so before Christmas and when they couldn’t be found in the stores anymore, i sold 3 of them on Ebay and made enough to pay for 1 of them AND some extra!

Great post!

Hey Suzanne.. I think you forgot to mention something… Well.. Here’s my tip:
When your buying something always think “thrice”.. why thrice?
1) Think about the buyer ahead.. would he want to buy it? Check out the features and condition.. also the color of the product (girls love pink and boys love dark colors) :P
2) The price? If the price is like “OMG, Its not possible!” there is a catch in the product.. So just find out more about the seller..
3) Now, here is the most important part – Would the buyer actually buy it? If your buying it cheap and selling it for the market price, why would he? So always keep a negotiable price and always make it 5-10% OFF the market value if you can.. Oh yes, also think if the product is a hot selling product? Will you be able to sell it quick and make money asap.. So.. Target the HOT PRODUCTS! :D

Just my 2 cents! :P

hi Suzanne,
Just your Will Smith quote alone makes reading this post worthwhile. I’d never heard it before, but reinforces why I like him so much. I also like Eric’s idea above about finding misspelled products on ebay. I’ve gotten some great deals that way when people have done a poor or inaccurate job of describing their listing, though I usually keep the item for myself :) instead of reselling it for a profit. ~ Steve

Well … this is ONE reason I LOVE blogging! I enjoy coming up with topics and post ideas … researching them and trying to bring good content to the table … but the fact that you readers take the time to add awesome, helpful tips and ideas are what really sets blogging apart from reading books or traditional “websites” … or even eBooks … what everyone else brings to the table is often as or even more valuable than the original article.
*
@ mark ~ awesome idea and I’ve known others who are successful at the storage unit auctions too. I’d imagine in this horrible market there are a lot of people defaulting on their units … again … I’m sorry to say this but it’s a business decision and it works.
*
@ ~ eric ~ I love the misspelled word idea too. I too have found some great deals this way (for myself) and one example was I was looking for some under armour clothing for my boys and I misspelled it in my search … at first I was shocked that so few items came up … and then I realized my mistake. Well … of course there were no (or very few) bids on the items that did come up … hmmmm … awesome! As for a whole other post … I also use the misspelled word thing for some of my SEO and it works great! LOL
*
@ jeff ~ I haven’t used dealnews … thanks for the tip. But it did get me thinking about some others too … http://www.steepandcheap.com and Sam’s does an online auction with some great deals too … and I love the idea of shipping directly to YOUR buyer!
*
@ monty ~ all great advice! You do always want to know your “out” or exit strategy! If it’s too good to be true … be careful!
*
@ steve ~ I love him (Will Smith) too! Poor listings can be a real gem. No (or few pictures), or someone who doesn’t know how to make their picture the “default” or snapshot picture (the one that shows up in the listings) and many people won’t click on the listings without the picture … often if you click anyway … there is actually a picture but the “camera icon” devalues the auction … for no reason other than lack of auction listing skills.
*
Hey guys … I believe this buy/sell method can be hit or miss … so you do need to look at the overall picture for this “business idea” and just make sure you’re doing well enough overall … it might not be on every item … just keep that in mind.

I have been using with E-Bay for the past 3 years and I somehow know the products that are hotselling in there. Make a couple of thousands in there but I soon realized that there are risks involve should the research is not done thoroughly.

Lately, I have been more into dropshipping services and make almost ten thousand dollars just from 5 months of work. It involves lesser risk since you don’t have to stock up any products and the return is definitely great. Do give it a shot.

Thanks for these great tips! My sister recently started getting into Ebay, and she started by selling everything in the house (she lives in the family house where we grew up) – including MY old things – but at a much lower price than they are worth. I was quite upset when I found out she’d sold my bass guitar for $60(!) when it’s worth at least $250!! The person who bought it really scored on that sale. She’s gotten a little better now, but I’ll be sure to show her these tips.
