<—— A quick reminder to Retweet if you enjoy the post … Thanks!
As you may, or may not have noticed, some of the videos I have added to the blog take longer to load than others. This usually happens when I host the videos myself due to their size and/or length (as opposed to embeding them from YouTube for instance).
I’ve added several videos to my blog for the Blogging for Bucks BootCamp and I’ve never run into any problems while doing so. I’ve been trying to troubleshoot this and make sense of why this is happening.
I don’t know yet but one guess is that for the BootCamp I posted the videos on static pages as opposed to using a blog post type entry.
I’ve tried the same video format that I’ve used in the past and I’ve even played around with some other formatting and it’s pretty much the same result. I have always used the video upload button in the admin section (image below) and I use .swf format like I’ve always used in the past) so I’m not sure why this is causing so many problmes.
I have posted the last video lesson/tutorial (Keyword Research) onto a static page and then I’ve link over to it … and we’ll see if we have better luck with it this way.
I have edited the post here: http://www.suzannefranco.com/keyword-research-my-tactics-and-formulas-video-tutorial/ and I’ve placed an image of a player there so that when you click on the player it will take you to the static page with the actual video. Here’s a direct link to the video page if you want to check it out: http://www.suzannefranco.com/keyword-research-video-tutorial/.
I’m hoping this will cut down on the load problems we’ve been experiencing, as well as, the problems with the RSS emails that go out when I post.
Meanwhile, I will be searching high and low for some answers so we can all learn from this. Thanks for your patience. *SmiLes* Suzanne
P.S. Did you have any problems loading the posts that had video in them? If so, which ones? What browser were you using? Do you use video on your own site/blog? What format do you suggest I use? Any feedback and/or help would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. To create the videos … I’ve used both Camtasia screen capture software and I’ve used my Flip Ultra camera and then imported the file into Camtasia to edit and product it.
Glad you're here! I wrote my first eBook, "Blogging Idol Secrets Revealed," and it's my FREE gift for those who supported me in the Blogging Idol competition (and for my new online friends too LOL).

If you have a regular connection of 500 mega bits (most likely you do, check your web host) on a dedicated host (only suzannefranco.com on the server), this will allow at the most 5 simultaneous video views. Meaning that at the moment video library items grows to a significant number it will crunch your site, when you have viewers, immediately, even pages will take time load.
Either go to blip tv or pay big bucks to the web host. Another warning: If you decide to raise bandwidth speed many web hosts will fake it, or not even understand it.
On this issue I recommend Blip.tv (they pay) and Vimeo, and yes YouTube.

Nice! I’m so lucky to find this tutorial. Now, adding videos wouldn’t have to be such a task. Thank you so much for this very helpful post.

Hi Suzanne,
I think there’s several things going on here, so bear with me
Uploading and displaying videos.
WordPress does *ok* with videos but I think you’re using the wrong button
The ones on the top line – upload/imbed media will let you upload videos and store them in a way that WordPress copes with, and will let you manage the videos in a better way. If you don’t have the videos to upload direct, that button you’ve got highlighted is the way to go – but there’s a reason they don’t always work the way you expect….
Streamed video anywhere
YouTube hosts videos on servers that are designed to stream effortlessly. IMO, unless you’re on VPS or above, it’s very difficult to configure shared hosting to stream in a manner that doesn’t cause it to lock up – plus, depending on your server config, it may ‘cut off’ any requests, which can cause all manner of hiccups when streaming videos.
If there’s anything I can do to help, I’m happy to write up tutorials to get the most out of videos and hosting and using WordPress in a way that works for what you need it for
Hope you’re having a great Thanksgiving!

Hey Kai ~ How have you been? Thank you so much for taking the time to post this information. The last video I did was short enough to use YouTube … and that makes it pretty easy. The problem is when the video is longer … or when I want the video to be private or password protected and I want to self-host it.
I am anxious to try using the other button and see how I do with it. What format do you suggest?

In my opinion, the best way to add a video to your blog is by copying the YouTube code from the YouTube website. When you paste it to your blog post, you can always center it. It’s pretty easy!

Hi Bjorn ~ I agree! The problem is that YouTube only allows up to 10 mins of video so when I have something longer I can’t use them. There are also times I have video I don’t want to post publicly on YouTube but would rather self-host it. Someone did tell me that I could try the paid version of Vimeo (or Viddler – I forget LOL) so that might be an option too. They allow large files and I can make it private on their site and still post it on my blog. I’ll keep everyone posted if I go this route. *SmiLes*

Interesting post Suzzane, I wonder if the loading problems is due to the browser you are using, have you tried using different browsers to compare the results?

Yes, I definitely see a difference with the different browsers. I’ve had videos load perfectly fine in FireFox and they won’t load in Explorer. Hmmmmm ….

I would think you would be best to put the videos on a external host such as utube and link to them otherwise you are bound to get bandwidth and other problems… also of course you would get extra coverage plus a link from that site
