Twitter Ratio – Do you know how to control it?

So … are you starting to get the hang of Twitter … but you’re ready to learn some of the tips and tricks to using it effectively? Let’s look at one tip today … on how to keep your following/follower ratio where Twitter wants to see it.

When I did my last Twitter post about how to Use Twitter to Promote Your Niche Site I mentioned a 10 % ratio you need to watch out for … and what that means is that Twitter will only allow you to follow 10% more people than the number of people who are following you. So for instance if you have 1,000 followers you will only be able to follow 1,100 people. These don’t need to be the same people but if you go to follow your 1,101st person … Twitter won’t let you follow them.

I had heard about this ratio but until shortly after making that post/video … I hadn’t actually seen it happen … but it did happen to me.

So … now I’m going to teach you one way to keep your ratio under control so you won’t be blocked from following more peeps.

I use Friend or Follow to unfollow people who I follow who aren’t following me back … and I’ll show you in this video how I do so and how I decide whether or not to unfollow someone.

How is your Twitter ratio doing? Are you following more than who are following you back? How do you decide if it’s time to unfollow someone? Do you have any other tips or ideas … or questions? Let us hear from you! *SmiLes* Suzanne

P.S. If you not already following me on Twitter please do and I’ll follow you back ;) http://www.twitter.com/suzannefranco

Suzanne, I have created my web site so as not to directly sell anything to the reader but there are commission paying links within the page. I’ve taken the time and steps to point this out clearly and my main priority is to donate up to 85% of everything earned to help fund a variety of online charities.

I believe this direction is linked to my destiny, I have no compunction to be rewarded for anything I do online but if I can set up a recurring income stream, it will virtually run on autopilot without human intervention.

I would be content building similar sites over the next few years and concentrating heavily into what I can learn from Ken McAuthur at Affiliate Showcase.

And from his platform, I will hopefully gain a better leverage to focus more on helping other charities directly with half earnings from ken’s site.

Thank You for standing by me and helping me with good social-media-advice.

Kind Regards, Frank Burns

I don’t really like being this cold about it, even though I’m at least aware of buliding brand etc I more or less just follow the ones who I’m interested in. I follow people because they write interesting stuff, even though this gives me a really crappy ratio.

I don’t think it’s “cold” at all! We all use Twitter for different reasons and it makes sense to follow the people who you enjoy. When I have followed someone who ends up spamming me or I just don’t have the same common interest … I unfollow ;)

Hi Suzanne ~ Very Interesting! One of my goals for the month is to increase my twitter followers by 200, so this was some really helpful info. I agree with you if someone is spamming or has to tweet everything all the time, and I find them of no interest, I unfollow them as well.
~Cheers!

Hey Suzanne, I am way under so at the moment I don’t have to worry about upsetting my ratio. Although I do use friend Or Follow, I’ve found another site called Tweepular which can come in useful for doing bulk follow or unfollow tasks. It’s also quite cute if you like watching a Tweet Bird doing the ‘MoonWalk. :D

It is really cool to see how you are willing to help newbies & make it profitable for you, Suzanne. But my particular favorite about this post are as following:
1. Chosen a/v media
2. Simple step by step mode which would bring a lot of loyal newbies back for more.

Thanks Chris … I’m definitely willing to help anyone who needs it … not really profitable yet (not much anyway) but I’m moving that direction. LOL … Thanks for your feedback … and I’m trying to do more and more video. ;)

Hi Suzanne,

Yeah I’ve experienced that 10% ratio between the people you follow and your followers, but I think that ratio only applies if you reached 1000 followers already, what I do about this is I unfollow the person that I followed in the past days that never followed me back, it’s a bit time consuming but you have to this in order for you to follow more people. Thanks for sharing the video by the way.

LOL … I just hit again this past week … so I had to get it back under control. LOL … I’ve read it only kicks in after either 1,000 or 2,000 followers … so that’s why some people don’t really believe it exists. ;)

The Twitter ratio rule is actually new to me. Glad to have bumped into this post. This is especially useful as your followers grow more and more. Makes perfect sense. Friend or Follow seems like a very neat tool. Thanks for sharing.
