Watch This Video Lesson

Twitter Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s

  • Fill out your profile (with a link to your site)
  • Change your background (go to “Settings”)
  • Use Twellow and Twitter Search to search by keyword
  • Follow a few people at a time (20-40 or so) and try to keep your follow to follower ratio at about 10% (UPDATE: I have no idea at what number they enforce this … but today I’ve confirmed that I’m following exactly 10% more than are following me back and I cannot follow anyone)
  • Do tweet information that’s fun, entertaining, useful and that pertains to your niche
  • Do retweet for those who you are following

Don’ts

  • Don’t use the background that comes with the general set up
  • Don’t leave the generic image on your profile
  • Don’t just start following anyone and everyone
  • Don’t tweet sales pitches when you’re getting started with your new account

Are you promoting on Twitter? Was this video helpful? Did you know you could search Twitter by keyword? Are you using Twitter to grow any of your businesses? Do you have any questions for me? Let us hear from you below! *SmiLes* Suzanne

Suzanne, why do you recommend to keep the ratio at 10%? (Must admit that I am brand new to using Twitter)

Hi Mikael ~ Well … I know that you will get banned/suspended from Twitter for doing anything they consider “spam” … and I’ve read all over the place that you need to watch out for how many “follow” requests you make at a time … but recently I heard the ratio of 10% … I know that can’t be exact because I see some people follow me who have followed 600+ people with very few followers but I also don’t stick around to see if they get the axe! LOL … You don’t want to go crazy for sure because you don’t want to be suspended or banned … if anyone else knows more about this … please share with us ;) *SmiLes*

(UPDATE: I have no idea at what number they enforce this … but today I’ve confirmed that I’m following exactly 10% more than are following me back and I cannot follow anyone … my numbers are: 2,554 followers & following 2,809)

Great video! I do not use any automated Twitter stuff. Now I know what you’re talking about with those automated followers. When I mentioned that I got an iphone people came out of the woodwork. I didn’t follow any of them because they all had something to promote.

This video especially helped me because we have a local web design client who I’ll be starting to Twitter for and I didn’t know how to really find people to follow in that niche. I use Twitter but it’s for a mix of things business and personal and don’t really search for people to follow right now.

I also don’t follow everyone who follows me. I am very picky LOL It’s obvious who truly wants to network or connect with me. I don’t even pay attention to who unfollows me like so many people do on Twitter.

So I did have a question but now I forgot what it was. If I remember, I’ll come back and post.

Hey Angie … Thanks for the feedback here (and for the comment on YouTube! *huGs*) … I am not normally a fan of automated anything when it comes to relationship building! LOL … with the iphone expample … would it have been any different if some had done an “@” message to you telling you you’re going to love your new iphone and that they have a site with all kinds of helpful tips for new iphone users? And THEN followed you? I have no problem with people using Twitter for business but it’s about what you have to OFFER others … not what you can get from them! That will come in time if you’ve EARNED it right?! Let me know if you need any promotion ideas for your new client … I’d be happy to help in any way I can. Austin and I will also be sharing everything we know about promoting online in our password protected posts (http://www.suzannefranco.com/mother-son-competition/ for those who haven’t signed up for these free tips) … and we hope others will contribute there as well. *SmiLes*

There is no doubt about the fact that Twitter is a phenomenon. The site that would like to be seen as social networking portal and with such potential of web marketing. I must say that this idea was great and people who created the site must have got a lot of money from it. I don’t like Twitter. It’s a machine to make money/traffic/spam. I know that it is the purpose of this site, but I find this a little bit disturbing. I’m one of those old timers who see blogging as something that is done for the people and not for money. And I also would like to see the best blogs at the top of the web blockbuster list. And now it is all about marketing, just a little about specific site content. And that is sad for me.

Yes, there are definitely two schools of thought when it comes to what a blog “should” be used for and I totally understand your viewpoint. I’ve met some great people through my blog and through Twitter and I’ve helped a lot of people learn how to make money online - using both of these ways too. I’ve asked questions on Twitter and gotten great answers within minutes and it would’ve taken me hours to research … so that’s a fun aspect too. Let me know if I can help in any way ;) Suzanne´s last blog ..Twitter - Friend or Follow … Control Your Following/Follower Ratio (Video) My ComLuv Profile

    Very informative video.
I never thought that there could be so many thing to Twitter. Having said that I should admit the fact that Twitter can change your business drastically if your understand and learn to leverage it. But the unfortunate part is that most of the people do not know how to use Twitter and keep spamming others.
More of such videos should create a better understanding of the uses of Twitter.

Yes … I get hit with a ton of spam on Twitter … and it seems to increase now that I’m growing my following.

I haven’t used this yet but I plan to look into it as a way to combat the spam: http://www.bloggingtips.com/2009/09/12/take-control-of-automated-twitter-spam-with-truetwit/.

Not more Internet users know about and use Twitter. 8% of advertisers think that twitter is a “very effective” promotion tool.” It’s much easier to convert twitter time to money in the bank when you’re small or local. Nice post. This is really helpful video.

Twitter seems to change the numbers back and forth but, generally speaking, you can follow a minimum of 500 people in a day. I have seen it higher recently, that’s why I said minimum.

When you first join you can follow up to 2,000 people irregardless of the amount of people following you.

After you reach the 2,000 plateau you can then exceed that by 10% of those following you.

    Cheers,
    Rod

    Hey Suzanne,
Great tips on how to use twitter properly. It really is a fun way to get traffic to your sites as well as meet up with new people. I’ve met some great Internet Marketers and actually had an opportunity to meet in person (we live only about an hour away). I like to retweet posts like this that I know my followers would appreciate.
    Great video too. @rsonline
