What to do After Penguin Update? Don’t Panic Just Yet!

by Suzanne on May 10, 2012

If you do any type of online marketing or SEO you’ve undoubtedly heard all of the rumblings about the “penguin update” from Google. So … now what? Well, none us “really” know yet what to do from here. Well, except to keep writing and posting since that’s the ONE thing we know pleases Google right?!

I don’t have much to report on this subject because it’s simply too soon to draw any real conclusions. There will be plenty of people testing out new ideas so I’ll leave it to them and wait to see what they say – after the dust has settled that is.

But my friend Michelle MacPhearson (From Idea to Impire) did a video stating my thoughts exactly so I thought I’d share it with you.

What do you think of the whole Google update? Were your sites hurt by this latest round or are you ranking better than ever? Let’s hear from you k? *huGs* Suzanne

Hey Suzanne! Excellent post and the video is absolutely perfect. Some of my sites have dropped in ranking while others have stayed pretty much the same…

Definitely going to share this with my coaching clients who are all scratching their heads thinking WTF happened… I think this pretty much sums up where we’re all at right now.

Great point though from Michelle – we choose to play the game and be at the mercy of another company, so if we don’t like it, time to find a new marketing strategy.

Hi Suzanne!
Yep took a hit myself… bad… and as a fairly new blogger well lets just say Google needs to call me Mr. Sabados no more first name basis haha… Like you I am searching for the fixes and adjustments but alas not too much on the subject yet.
Anyway I will also post any updates I find on my blog as well. Hopefully the “dust” settles soon.
Take care Suzanne

The best way to increase the popularity of your site is also the old way. And the hard way! Provide valuable information and update your content continously.

What do you mean by “get back”? Is it still indexed? There’s a difference between being deindexed and dropping in the SERPs … put the URL into the search bar and see if it’s indexed … if so …. then from what I understand Google took away “credit” from certain backlinks that were pointing to that site … so if you have a way of creating legitimate backlinks to the site that should help … use things like: blog comments (use good judgement here LOL), Squidoo lenses, video descriptions (any description area for that matter) … and of course lots of good content … If you give me more detail maybe I can help ;)

Thanks for the useful reply suzzane! Indeed you gave some of the good actionable tips! I would like to suggest some more tips! As far as the Penguin Update is concerned, the value of inbound links are now making more importance! If the site has got lots of sitewide links i.e. Links from footers of the website, make sure to get those links removed from linking to the target website! Make a brief timeline analysis of the link building volume by checking into majestic SEO! If the linking has been done rapidly, make sure you do the same i.e. Get the links removed before the Penguin kisses your website!

I have to say that I agree with what Michelle says in her video.I am also holding back and I am not going to do anything yet. At least for a month or so. However i will continue to add valuable and quality content on my website and & update it several times / day and.. … that’s about it.

All the best,

I loss all the keyword rankings for one of my website after penguin update. I am updating my website with quality content regularly and I am not using any Black Hat techniques. But still I didn’t understand why I loss all the keyword rankings.

The video from Michelle MacPhearson say’s it perfectly – No one is sure about Google Penguin, and the people who say they’ve got it figured out is in Michelle’s words “talking shit”. I Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Two of my sites that I was having issues with after the Panda update seem to be okay, a couple others that looked like they were untouched by Panda dropped significantly when Penguin came in. Michelle is right, there really isn’t much we can do right now, everything seems like guess work. As you say in your title, Don’t Panic!

There is no place to panic. Its just an update, so we have to start struggling again and keep posting good quality contect. That way we will collect many backlins – naturally. I believe we will reach our pagaranks again guys/girls! Dont give up!

Hi Suzanne, glad to read your post but my problem is something very strange which m not able to recognise. Would be glad, if you will do it for me as m fail to understand it, that is- When this Penguin Update came, there was no effect on my websites but now slowly and steadily my keywords for my websites are going down, I m not getting the point why its happening? Please suggest something.

Suzanne i want to consult something with you, one of my friend has a website regarding printing services and before google penguin update he was on first and 2nd page of google SERP against particular keywords but after live penguin update he almost vanished. The reason in that he had two URLs for single page and he didn’t fix it, but now he fixed it after this update. I want to ask that if he write fresh content and re-write meta title and meta description for all his website’s page then he can recover?. Please share your knowledge with me on this situation.

My sites got hit really bad with this update after staying on top positions for 5+ years. We always put hard work on our site that is why I did not care any update since those were targeting people trying to go through short-cuts.
I got response from Google stating that I was not manually penalized. I try to add fresh content to my sites fixed all duplicate pages including language pages, changed domain name servers, and domain who is records, start to do some PPC. I personally think this Penquin update was really a bad and unfair one. Some top ranking sites I know cheating big time..

I have seen top sites and I have seen these things. Others sites just post ” guest blogger” but actually they were paid to do it. Sometimes they own the site and they just pass back and forth the guest posting. You cannot even properly comment because you will be labelled as spam. They even create Do follow list, that includes their website and most of them are “No follow”. Newbie bloggers are always victimized hoping for some juice.

Problem with Google is that it can take 2-3 months (or more) for changes to take effect. So even if you do fix something, you’re still screwed for months.

Thats a useful video Suzanne. Its true more people than ever are overly optimizing their websites for ranking best in search engines. AT the same time Google keeps on delivering best websites to its people through such updates.

The recent Google update caused an uproar and a major shakedown on the Internet. Lots of people were affected, rankings down, sites penalized, jobs lost…what do we have to do? Since it’s beyond our control, we just have to adapt and take on other means that can work with the current system implemented by Google.

Suzzane,

Tony Tovar here. Hope you’ve been doing well.
Just wanted to let you know that we signs of penguin as early as Feb.
We can see that sort of thing when we have hundreds of clients that
Depend on SEO.

From what we have gathered, it all comes down to link building profiles and which pages get links to them the most on your site. All of our clients are doing well and white tactics are still holding up my niche sites.

My two cents,
Tony

Hi Suzanne,

Thank you for the video. Luckily I wasn’t personally hit by the penguin but I know quite a few people that have seen their sites tank. We’re talking between 50-80 percent drops in traffic and income. Terrible.

And since the overall G serp results are no better now, I hope that they will correct the penguin as it is clearly not working.

Google has really lost its mind since its going on making updates after updates, Penguin and Panda, and what not. And sadly it has hampered the business of most bloggers. A few of my sites did get affected with the updates but thankfully I was able to recover them using some tips mentioned around the internet.

Jen,

You’ll need to make sure that your link building isn’t
over optimized. Like make sure that not every single
link you create to one page is identical. You have to
vary the anchor text you use for links. You should see
if http://www.opensiteexplore.com sees the same anchor text
heavy use of one word over others.
